Gaming and Information Retrieval

Apart from the gaming done in public libraries I dont think there is a place for this in academic libraries. We can certainly be aware of the skills which students acquire through gaming but students themselves are not so different from students in the past. That is they like to think that their recreation is owned by them and with the exception of the occasional cool adult they dont want to share with the older generations.

I have heard the comment from a young student that he wouldnt mind learning maths through gaming if the game was challenging and graphically interesting enough. To reach this point educational institutions would have to think carefully about budgets as the commercial world will always be advertising the bigger and better version. Could an education institution keep up the momentum.

An awareness of the skills students develop can be used to connect with the student but a skill which students still need to learn is how to adapt to excellent methods of information retrieval in existance. Learning is always a two way process.

I have created two delicious accounts. One for practice on which I will collect my interest bookmarks. One to bookmark curriculum resource pages which I will place in a cluster on my webpage.

Today I checked the tag curriculum resources against several search sites. The results were interesting in their variations of types of material. I think I will still use delicious for locating web resources but will also use citeUlike to locate articles linked to MU library

I have created a wiki called waresources.pbwiki.com. It is another tool for gathering web resources

I think Foxmarks will be very useful as I use at least four computers each week and now I will be able to access the same bookmarks from each. It will be interesting to see if this assists me to create a better workflow across multi computer locations.

RSS Feed - thing 6

Today I subscribed to the local abc radio feed. I listen to this radio station each day and often miss a topic I was interested in while I am at work. I intend going online later to pick it up but usually forget. I hope the feed will keep me in touch with my favourite radio station as I am an avid radio listener.

71/2 habits of successful learning

Having viewed the 7 1/2 habits I would say the easiest for me is to set goals. My current goal is to gather enough information here to be able to use it in my webpage.
For this goal I will need to make time at both work and home as I am always time poor. Strangely I was time richer many years ago when I was working, studying, raising children and renovating. I will also need to seek assistance in removing firfox from one of my computers as the browser cannot be either used or uninstalled. Finally the hardest habit for me is probably mentoring others as I usually expect them to know more than me in the first place.

Reasons for this blog

I hope this learning exercise will be useful in a practical way. I plan to use this blog to compile and store information I can use for my web page.
